Daily Life of the Commodore Park Herons
As of May 15, thirty-six chicks have hatched! Some chicks look large and are already flapping their wings, and in other nests eggs are still incubating. So far eagles are flying by instead of attacking.
We have been so fortunate this season for photographers Kathleen Atkins and Aurora Santiago who have been visiting the colony regularly, documenting with their incredible photos. The images are inspiring, enlightening, and give us insight to the daily interaction of the chicks and their parents. You can see more of their photos at facebook.com/kathleen.atkins.photography and www.flickr.com/photos/santiagoa
Don’t miss this amazing video of VERY hungry chicks! https://flic.kr/p/Gn8v7a

April 2 and April 30 Spring Viewing Events
This spring we will hosting 2 viewing events! We will have telescopes setup and our HHH naturalists on hand. The events are free and everybody is welcome so please help us spread the news!
April 2, 2016
Observe the herons as they do some nest building – the male herons bring the twigs, and if acceptable, the female places it in the nest. Watch them incubate eggs and protect the colony, or stand in the water with their steely gaze ready to spear a fish.
April 30, 2016
We will hopefully be able to see some heron chicks. Bonus is, we will be celebrating the chicks hatching with birthday cake!
Join us for one or both events at Commodore Park near the Ballard Locks Fish Ladder on the Magnolia side. Drop by anytime between 1:00 and 3:00 pm!
